Understanding Swollen Feet: Causes and Treatment

Swollen feet, ankles, and legs are common issues that many people experience. This condition, known as edema or oedema, is characterized by a buildup of fluid in these areas. While it can be uncomfortable, swollen feet are often a result of temporary factors and can be managed with simple remedies.

Causes of Swollen Feet:

  1. Prolonged standing or sitting: Activities that involve extended periods of standing or sitting can lead to fluid buildup in the lower extremities.
  2. Pregnancy: Fluid retention and increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy can cause swelling in the feet and ankles.
  3. Overweight: Being overweight or obese can put additional strain on the feet and lead to edema.
  4. Aging: As we age, the circulation in our legs and feet may not be as efficient, leading to fluid retention.
  5. Twisted or sprained ankle: Trauma to the foot or ankle, such as a sprain, can cause swelling.

Treatment and Home Remedies:

– Elevating the feet: Keeping the feet elevated can help reduce swelling, especially during pregnancy.
– Comfortable footwear: Wearing supportive and comfortable shoes can prevent swelling.
– Avoiding prolonged standing: Taking breaks and avoiding standing for long periods can help prevent edema.
– Using ice packs or compression bandages: Applying cold compresses or using compression bandages can reduce swelling.
– Staying hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out excess fluids from the body.
– Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of developing edema.
